Former Democratic Congressman Ben Jones (GA) got into a heated argument with CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield today over the Confederate flag, with Jones insisting that slavery and the flag are not “Southern sins.”
Jones––who some of you might remember played Cooter on The Dukes of Hazzard––argued that the Confederate flag may have been used by racists and other “horrible people,” but on that TV show and elsewhere, the flag is used in a “positive context.”
He touted the pride he and many others feel about the flag, but Banfield asked, “Where does that pride supersede other people’s pain?” Jones insisted the problems she’s speaking of aren’t relegated to the South, touted the racial progress the South has made, and said that “slavery is a much more complex thing” than you might imagine.
But when Jones dismissed white supremacy as a bunch of “nonsense,” that really set off Banfield, who pointed out white supremacy led to the deaths of nine people in a Charleston church. Jones fired back that major decisions shouldn’t be taken based on “the act of a demented hater” and got a little offended at Banfield seemingly suggesting he has backwards thinking.
