During breaking news coverage of the horrific Florida school shooting today, CNN’s Jake Tapper talked about adults are failing the children of America by not doing more to help ensure their safety.
He brought up stats the number of school shootings and the number of students affected by these horrors since Columbine, saying, “It is hard to not believe that the adults of America are not failing the children of America by not doing more to prevent guns from getting into the hands of the mentally ill and those who are violent and would carry out such a horrific act.”
Former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said this has become a serious, legitimate threat for schools these days, adding that he does not want to think about this being the new normal.
Tapper then spoke to Melissa Falkowski, a teacher who escaped the shooting, who described what she heard and witnessed.
She revealed that the school actually had a training exercise recently on this kind of horrible scenario just weeks ago. Falkowski said society’s inability to solve this problem is “totally unacceptable.”
Tapper agreed, saying, “It’s pretty clear that we’re failing our kids here. I’m not saying that the solution is one thing or another, but obviously, this does not happen in other countries the way it happens here.”
