Jake Tapper: ‘Opportunity for Christie’ to Restore Some Faith in Elected Leaders

CNN host Jake Tapper, discussing the scandal involving New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s staff celebrating the political havoc that George Washington Bridge lane closures created for the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, noted on Wednesday that there is a political “opportunity” for the Republican rising star. He said that, if Christie deals forcefully with this scandal and does not attempt to shift blame to others, he may help restore some of Americans’ lagging faith in their elected leaders.

Tapper noted that the “callousness” with which Christie’s staffers apparently celebrated the lane closures and effect on the city of Fort Lee was disturbing. “There’s one thing I want to say in the governor’s favor in terms of opportunity he has here,” he added.

He said that, given the fact that so few prominent figures in American life have suffered grave consequences for the many scandals the U.S. has experienced since 2008, Christie has a chance to restore some faith by addressing this issue forthrightly, contritely, and definitively.

“There’s an opportunity for Christie to seize the bull by the horns and actually do this thing right with full apologies, full explanations,” Tapper said. “We’ll see if he does that.”
