Jake Tapper to GOP Strategist Over Continued Trump-Putin Fracas: ‘What The Hell is Going On?!’
CNN’s Jake Tapper was left to question what the hell was going on in the wake of the White House’s most recent response to Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s “incredible offer” that would have subjected American citizens to Russian questioning.
On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders sent out this statement about the deal that would have allowed the Kremlin to interrogate U.S. citizens about unspecified crimes: “It is a proposal that was made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it. Hopefully, President Putin will have the 12 identified Russians come to the United States to prove their innocence or guilt.”
Speaking on MSNBC Wednesday night, former Ambassador Michael McFaul said he was flabbergasted by the Trump’s willingness to turn him over to the Russians, something thankfully Congress nixed in the bud.
After hearing a report on Sanders’ statement and McFaul’s response on his Thursday show, though, Tapper was likewise left dumbfounded by what was going on in these past few days amid the ongoing Trump-Putin fracas.
“What the hell is going on? Seriously, what the hell is going on?” Tapper exclaimed to the laughter of the panel. “Sincere offer from Putin and an incredible offer? I’m looking at you to see if you can answer the question. What?”
Republican strategist Josh Holmes replied, “That’s kind of my reaction, too. Obviously, what they are trying to do is send a message that they are serious about the 12 people, the 12 Russian government officials, that they want to do something about that, but in the process of trying to communicate that somehow they have given validity to a proposal by Vladimir Putin that I don’t know anyone, anyone who thinks that would be anywhere remotely acceptable to even have the conversation about. You don’t send diplomats over to be interrogated for crimes.”
