Jeffrey Toobin: Alabama Abortion Law is Just Following Trump’s Promise of Overturning Roe Vs. Wade
CNN Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin addressed Alabama’s Senate passing a law that effectively outlawed almost all instances of reproductive rights, vis a vis abortion, and plainly said that this is likely only the first step in many states outlawing abortion, following President Donald Trump’s promises.
Late Tuesday night, the Alabama Senate approved a measure outlawing almost all abortions in the state, including those involving rape and incest, which sets up a direct and inevitable challenge to Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that recognizes a woman’s constitutional right to end a pregnancy.
Toobin has long warned CNN viewers that Trump’s promise to appoint Supreme Court justices who want to overturn Roe v. Wade and the confirmation of justices that appear to many to be just that sort (Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh) is a direct threat to women’s reproductive rights.
Wednesday morning he spoke plainly, saying “Candidate Donald Trump said repeatedly he was going to appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would vote to overturn Roe V. Wade. What he meant by that, I think, was he will appoint justices to the Supreme Court who will vote to overturn Roe V. Wade.
“That’s what he’s done. There have been two confirmations — Anthony Kennedy who was a vote for Roe V. Wade has been replaced by Brett Kavanaugh who will vote to overturn it. There are now five votes on the court to overturn Roe V. Wade. All Alabama is doing is following the news. They have seen who was appointed to the Supreme Court and elections have consequences. This is one of them.”
