Jim Acosta Tangles With Sarah Sanders Over Trump Claim ‘Nobody Has Been Tougher’ on Russia Than Him
Last week, President Donald Trump told reporters that “nobody has been tougher on Russia” than he has, citing America’s military strength and exports of oil and gas as examples of his administration’s policies that Russia doesn’t want.
During today’s White House press briefing, CNN’s Jim Acosta pressed White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on the president’s claim, asking her if that was hyperbole. Acosta also pointed out instances of past presidents taking public action against Russia, such as Jimmy Carter boycotting the 1980 Summer Olympics and Ronald Reagan calling on the Berlin Wall to be torn down.
“You cite one example for each of those individuals,” Sanders retorted. “Let me list what this president has done that other administrations haven’t.”
The press secretary went on to read off a list of Trump’s accomplishments when it came to being tough on Russia, noting that he has imposed sanctions and issued statements condemning Russia regarding the UK poisoning attacks, among other things.
“It is without doubt this administration and this president has done a number of things to be tough on Russia,” she added.
Acosta pushed back, asking Sanders if we could take it “to the bank” when the president says Syria and Russia will pay a price for the recent chemical weapons attack.
“I am not going to get ahead of actions the United States may or may not take, but I think the president has been clear about what his intentions are,” Sanders responded, ending the briefing right there.
