Jimmy Kimmel Agrees: Spongebob Just Might Be a Conservative

Earlier this week, we brought you the bizarre story of the Spongebob Squarepants episode that has conservatives praising the main character for refusing to mooch off the government welfare state. As Jimmy Kimmel explained on his show last night, “somehow this plot has become a political allegory.”

The episode’s story, in which Spongebob is fired from his job at the Krusty Krab and must decide whether to go on unemployment or search for new opportunities, has people on both sides of the political spectrum claiming the character as one of their own. “Are any of those parties aware that they’re debating the motives of a cartoon sponge?” Kimmel asked.

The host said he didn’t think Nickelodeon was trying to make any kind of “social commentary” or that Spongebob is a “right-winger.” But that was before he saw a trailer for an upcoming 2-hour special in which Spongebob and Patrick visit the Obamacare website…
