It was supposed to be one of those benign CNN interviews where Fredricka Whitfield sat down with Joan Rivers to discuss her new book, “Diary of a Mad Diva.”
And then Whitfield asked Rivers about whether PETA’s predictable outrage over her wearing a fur coat on her book’s cover meant anything to her.
“This whole interview is becoming an offensive interview,” Rivers angrily said. “Are you wearing leather shoes? Then shut up!”
Whitfield began to protest, but Rivers cut her off. “I don’t want to hear this nonsense! Come to me with a paper belt and I’ll talk to you.”
When Whitfield tried to get the interview back on track, Rivers blew up . “I’m going. Really, I’m going,” she declared. “All you’ve done is negative. I’ve made people laugh for fifty years, I am put on earth to make people laugh! My book is funny! I wear fur that was killed 15 years ago! I work for animal rights! Stop it with this ‘And you do this, and you’re mean, and you do that.’ You are not the person to interview a person who does humor!”
And, like a bat into the night, she shrieked, yanked her earpiece out, and disappeared, leaving Whitfield agape.
