Police turned up at a Burbank, California Costco after comedian Joan Rivers chained herself to a shopping cart in order to protest the fact that the store refused to carry her book, I Hate Everything… Starting With Me, because of a word printed on its cover.
Rivers — with the help of a bullhorn — blasted the company as customers looked on. Local news outlet KTLA reports that Rivers even compared the store to Nazi Germany:
Stunned customers may have been laughing at the spectacle but Rivers told KTLA that she didn’t find anything about the incident funny.
“It’s about First Amendment rights,” she said. “Costco banned my book because of one word on the back cover. I feel like this is a country where the people should have the right to have the literature they want.
“This is the beginning of Nazi Germany.”
“The worst thing about Costo,” she said later, “was they kicked me out without giving me any free samples.”
No charges were filed against Rivers, who was eventually escorted off the premises.
Fox News has a report on the comedienne’s protest — perhaps the most important of our time:
