Joe Scarborough Chides Media Obsession with ‘Latest Fad’ AOC: She Only Got 15k Votes, Hillary Got 65 Million

Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough has an important message to press covering new Democratic party leaders compared to that of established past leaders: your outsized coverage for emerging figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is not commensurate with the number of votes that elected her compared to that of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

This commentary came in the context of reported split Democratic House debate over the handling of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s “dual loyalty” comments that many viewed as anti-Semitic in nature. A House resolution that broadly condemned “hate” as opposed to specific condemnation of Omar’s comments was passed, which brought some partisan derision for being too broad and/or toothless.

Scarborough recalled his time in Congress and noted the time-honored tradition of a freshman class of newly elected representatives “could say something extraordinarily stupid,” which would then get focused on and presented as a radicalization of the opposition party. He then likened that today’s media ecosystem and chiding the press coverage of the latest fad, in this instance AOC.

Scarborough used total votes received to exemplify the difference in political support AOC actually received.

“You now have the press doing that. AOC, I think she won her primary, which was basically her election. She got 15,000 votes. She won by 3,500 votes. She got 15,000 votes. Hillary Clinton got what, 63, 64, 65 million votes? I think the press needs to keep everything in perspective.”

He then made his point further that not all of the newly elected freshman representatives may not be ready for primetime.

“They represent their districts, their communities, but they also now have to work on a national level, working with other members of Congress. They have a lot to learn. I think that’s safe to say, some of these freshmen.”
