Six weeks ago, it seemed almost certain the Joel McHale would replace Craig Ferguson on CBS’ The Late Late Show. Already considered a top contender for the gig, rumors kicked into high gear after McHale retweeted a photo of a selfie he took with CBS head Les Moonves and his wife Julie Chen. It didn’t help that comedian Norm Macdonald, who had been campaigning for the job, decided to “break” the big news on Twitter.
Last night, McHale finally cleared up the confusion on Conan. “That was a fucking picture,” he said, explaining that the entertainment industry just assumed the photo constituted some sort of “contract.” He joked that it just as easily could have meant that he’s joining Chen’s daytime show The Talk.
Here’s the fateful tweet in question:

When Conan O’Brien asked him if he would even be interested in hosting a late night show McHale answered, “Fuck no! Who would do that? That is so much work, right?”
“I’m funny about once a week,” McHale said, insisting he has no aspirations beyond hosting The Soup on E! Eager to move on, he started joking about that network’s coverage of the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West wedding.
