Joel McHale Previews WHCD: These People ‘Have Enough Power to Never Laugh Again’
Joel McHale is hosting the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night, and gave CNN’s Jake Tapper a preview of his remarks and explained why all the powerful people he’ll be roasting unrepentantly will enjoy being on the serving end of the jokes.
He told Tapper, “What I’ve learned is there are so many powerful people, so many rich people that, long ago, they made enough money and now have enough power to never laugh again. So they want to hear jokes about them. Even though they might not want to be roasted, they are the most important person in any other room, so they want that feeling.”
McHale rolled his eyes at the criticism the dinner emboldens the “chummy” relationship between the press and those powerful people. He said, “Oh, who cares? It’s just an excuse to go out and have a fun night and party.”
He also said his goal isn’t to roast people too much, because “if you become too strident––if it’s not funny, it’s not funny, and then you just look like a guy yelling at somebody.”
