John Avlon Blasts ‘Slippery Slope’ of Nike Pulling American Flag Shoes: ‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’
John Avlon is not impressed by Nike’s decision to pull back their new shoes sporting a Betsy Ross American flag theme.
The CNN senior political analyst used his New Day Reality Check segment to talk about how the athletics company reportedly ditched the shoes following complaints from former NFL quarterback-turned-company endorser Colin Kaepernick. The decision has been widely panned by conservative commentators, and Avlon agreed with those rejecting the idea that the original flag design is intrinsically tied to America’s history with slavery.
“This is why we can’t have nice things,” Avlon said. “To cast the Betsy Ross flag as the moral equivalent of the Confederate flag crystalizes the slippery slope many conservatives warn about.”
Avlon continued to warn about Democrats being cast as “unpatriotic” with this issue, and that “the American flag is not the province of any one political party. Celebrating our independence and our constant, imperfect effort to live up to our founding ideals that all people are created equal is something that should unite us, especially on the Fourth of July.”
