House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) tore into Edward Snowden, the former private security contractor who leaked a variety of secret National Security Agency monitoring programs to the press, in an interview with Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos broadcast Tuesday. Boehner called Snowden a “traitor” and said that he was fully briefed on the NSA programs.
“He’s a traitor,” Boehner said of Snowden. “The president outlined last week that these are important national security programs to help keep Americans safe, and give us tools to fight the terrorist threat that we face.”
“The disclosure of this information puts Americans at risk,” he continued. “It shows our adversaries what our capabilities are and it’s a giant violation of the law.”
Boehner said that he has been fully briefed on the scope of both the NSA’s telephonic and electronic communication records warehousing programs. He added that he does not think these programs are inconsistent with the American right to privacy.
