House Majority Leader John Boehner had some harsh words for the White House Friday morning during a House GOP news conference, scolding the Democrats for playing a “game” with regards to the government shutdown.
“The American people expect their leaders to sit down and try to resolve their differences,” the Ohioan Republican began. “I was at the White House the other night and listening to the president some 20 times explain to me why he wasn’t going to negotiate; sat there and listened to the Majority Leader [Harry Reid] saying to me that we’re not going to talk until we surrender.”
He then held up a copy of today’s The Wall Street Journal containing an anonymous White House official saying, “We don’t care how long [the shutdown] lasts because we’re winning.”
“This isn’t some damn game!” Boehner said. “The American people don’t want their government shut down, and neither do I!”
He concluded: “All we’re asking for is to sit down and to have a discussion and to reopen the government and to bring fairness to the American people under Obamacare. It’s as simple as that. But it all has to begin with a simple discussion.”
