John Bolton: It’s ‘Hard to Believe’ Putin Was Unaware of Russian Election Meddling
National Security Advisor John Bolton says it is “hard to believe” that Russian President Vladimir Putin was unaware of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
During an interview with ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl Sunday on This Week, Bolton was asked by Karl about Putin’s knowledge of the meddling.
Bolton replied by noting that when he spoke with Putin in preparation for the summit in June, the Russian president “made it plain that he said the Russian state was not involved.”
Karl then asked the NSA head if there was any way “we could have 12 officials, some of them quite senior in Russian military intelligence, carry out an operation to undermine a U.S. presidential election and Putin himself would not know?”
“I find it hard to believe,” Bolton replied. “But that’s what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see eye to eye with President Putin and ask him about it.”
Bolton’s remarks come just days after 12 Russian officials were indicted by the US Department of Justice for election meddling and one day before President Donald Trump is set to sit down with Putin in Helsinki for the summit.
