While some well-respected conservatives are quickly brushing aside any speculation that Sarah Palin could be a serious contender for President, the man who first launched her into the national spotlight is unabashedly coming to her defense. Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain appeared on Fox News Sunday and declared Palin to be a “major factor” who “of course” can beat President Obama.
When asked by Chris Wallace how Palin could overcome her high negatives in polls, McCain responded:
“I’ve never seen anyone as mercilessly and relentlessly attacked as I have seen Sarah Palin in the last couple of years. But she also inspires great passion, particularly among the Republican faithful.”
McCain was doubtful whether she would actually run for President, but if in fact she does, it seems at least from this interview that he would consider once again reaffirming his decision that if he can’t be President, Palin would be the next best thing.
