John McCain Tells Seth Meyers the Real Reason He Picked Sarah Palin

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) joined Seth Meyers on Late Night Monday night to reminisce about his various appearances on Saturday Night Live over the years. By picking Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, McCain figured he’s at least partly responsible for Tina Fey’s massive success.

“It made Tina Fey famous forever,” McCain said of her “iconic” Palin impression. Asked if he knew right away that Palin looked like Fey, McCain joked, “That’s why I selected her.”

On the Saturday before the election, McCain appeared as a surprise guest in an SNL sketch with Fey as Palin, in which she went “rogue” and started selling her own “Palin 2012” t-shirts on QVC. He told Meyers it was not a difficult decision to do that right before the election because he wanted to people, “and what better way to reach particularly young voters than being on Saturday Night Live?”

McCain said that’s the same reason he was sitting down with Meyers on Late Night. “I don’t think a lot of old geezers like me are watching, right?”
