John Oliver: FIFA ‘Can Go F*ck Themselves’ If They Want to Sue Me
As funny as HBO Last Week Tonight host John Oliver‘s comedic takedowns are, they’re apparently a thorn in the side of his show’s lawyer.
During a Q&A Tuesday with Cosmopolitan Editor Joanna Coles in New York, Oliver said he’s constantly on the phone with his lawyer about the things he says on his show.
“He’s like ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ but really depressed,” Oliver said of his show’s attorney, according to the New York Post. “He’s a guy on speakerphone who is always warning us. They’re more nervous if we’re dealing with someone like FIFA who enjoys being in court.”
FIFA is the international association that governs the World Cup. To much acclaim, Oliver mocked FIFA as soccer’s version of church. “Just think about it,” he said in June. “Its leader is infallible, it compels South American countries to spend money they don’t have building opulent cathedrals, and it may ultimately be responsible for the deaths of shocking numbers of people in the Middle East.”
“Consequently we were right,” Oliver added at the Q&A. “So, FIFA can go fuck themselves.”
