John Oliver Mocks Nancy Pelosi: I Don’t Know If Anyone Wants to Hear Her Speak For That Long

John Oliver had some fun at the expense of Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for her filibuster-like speech she had on behalf of DREAMers on Wednesday.

The Last Week Tonight host appeared on The Late Show and Stephen Colbert had mentioned that at the time of the show’s taping, the House Minority Leader had already been speaking on the House floor for over eight hours, which the audience applauded.

However, Oliver wasn’t so quick to join in on the celebration.

“I’m not sure deep down you know for sure if or what you’re applauding there,” Oliver reacted. “‘Oh, she talked for seven hours.’ That sounds like an endurance effort to do and to listen to, to some extent.”

But wait, he wasn’t done.

“I don’t know if anyone wants to hear Nancy Pelosi speak about anything for seven hours,” Oliver said. “If she read the Harry Potter audiobook, we’d have no movies right now! That’s what I’m saying.”

Colbert told Oliver that Pelosi was speaking in support of DREAMers and to get a vote on DACA, which sparked a rowdy cheer from the audience. Nonetheless, the HBO personality wasn’t exactly sold.

“It’s not gonna work. It’s not gonna work,” Oliver responded. “It’s not gonna work, but it’s a valiant public effort.”

Pelosi began speaking at 10AM Wednesday morning and wrapped up just after 6PM, which was reportedly the longest speech ever recorded in the House chamber. Her Democratic colleagues gave her a standing ovation once she finished.
