John Oliver continued his pre-HBO debut media tour last night with a stop on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. While there, he was forced to relive the emotional send-off he received from The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart late last year.
“That was hard, I loved that man,” Oliver told Jimmy Fallon of his former boss at Comedy Central. “He’s one of my favorite people in the world.” He said he thought he going to be able to keep it together until Stewart asked him if he was alright, at which point he “burst into tears.”
Oliver also discussed the reaction the clip got some his friends back home in England who couldn’t believe he was openly crying on American television. “We’re suspicious of emotion,” he said of Brits. “It’s weakness… You’re bring shame upon your family name to show emotion of any color.”
