John Oliver Says Stewart’s ‘Fine’ with Move in First Interview Since HBO Announcement

John Oliver gave his first interview Friday since it was announced he would be leaving his job at The Daily Show to start up a new weekly comedy series on HBO. And instead of going the cable news route, Oliver sat down with Regis Philbin and the hosts of Fox Sports 1’s new afternoon show Crowd Goes Wild.

While they ended spending much of the interview discussing Oliver’s love for British football, Philbin began by asking what Jon Stewart said when he found out one of his most tenured correspondents was leaving. “Jon Stewart took you in off the streets… and kept you for seven and a half years,” Philbin said. “What did he say when you told him you were going to leave?”

“We’ve been talking it a lot back and forth, so he’s fine,” Oliver replied. “I’m a small cog in that mighty machine, so that machine exists without this particular British cog.”

“I always thought it would be Jon Stewart, and then Colbert and then Oliver, what’s wrong with that?” Philbin asked. “Why didn’t Comedy Central think of that? Why do I have to think of everything?”

Before moving on to other topics, Oliver relived a special moment he shared with Philbin over the summer on The Daily Show, before recreating a more scandalous version for the Fox Sports crowd.
