John Oliver Takes on EPA Chief Pruitt’s Scandals: He Was Not Expecting That ‘Fox News Tone’

John Oliver took on EPA Chief Scott Pruitt’s growing scandals on Last Week Tonight, from his pricey office upgrades to full security on trips to Disneyland, pay raises to staffers, and curiously cheap rental deal.

“This is a pretty sudden fall from grace for Pruitt, who’s been a conservative favorite for his aggressively pro-industry stance,” Oliver said, pointing out that Pruitt’s disdain for the agency he runs isn’t much of a secret, as his LinkedIn page still describes him as “a leading advocate against the EPA’s activist agenda.”

Oliver went on to play clips from Pruitt’s disastrous interview with Fox News’s Ed Henry, in which he faced a brutal grilling over his $50 per night condo rental from a lobbyist.

“First, that is clearly not the Fox News tone that Pruitt was expecting,” Oliver said. “That is the face of a man who thought he was walking into an Applebees, and ended up in an apple full of bees.”

The HBO showed off a number of apartments in D.C. available for the same price on AirBnB, in response to Pruitt’s defense that he was paying “market rate,” and the options — including a one leather couch named “Black Beauty” — were less than luxurious.

One of Pruitt’s “dumbest” costs to taxpayers, Oliver joked, was a$2,460 repair at his apartment when Pruitt was found unresponsive. The EPA did not comment on the incident, but reports said Pruitt was just “napping.”

“The day that happened was a Wednesday,” Oliver noted. “So on top of everything else, the director of the EPA was sitting at home taking a nap in the middle of the day on a Wednesday.”

“Get the fuck up Pruitt, You’ve got a country to ruin!”
