John Oliver: We ‘Didn’t Crash’ the FCC Website

Did John Oliver’s epic segment in defense of net neutrality really “crash” the FCC’s website? That what many websites (including this one) posited this week after the FCC itself acknowledged that high traffic volume was making it impossible to access its public comment system.

Oliver addressed the issue during an appearance on CBS This Morning Wednesday, calling Charlie Rose’s suggestion that he single-handedly brought down the FCC website a “huge accusation.”

“We didn’t crash their website,” Oliver said. “We merely pointed people to their website and told them why they should be angry about it. And they went in droves.”

The Last Week Tonight host also touched on his infamous Mitch McConnell attack ad, something Gayle King said almost made her fall off her treadmill.

“HBO is the moral wild west,” Oliver said, explaining why he was able to show extended video shots of what he claimed was the Senate minority leader’s “old, white, wrinkled dick.” The premium cable channel lets other shows display “blood and boobs,” but he decided to go with “100% of Mitch McConnell.”
