Jon Huntsman Rips Mitt Romney At NBC News/Facebook Debate

Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney got into a bit of a tussle during Sunday’s NBC News/Facebook debate, as Huntsman addressed the “political spin” on the stage and then laid in to Romney for criticizing the former Ambassador to China “for serving my country.”

[Mitt Romney] criticized me while he was out raising money…for serving my country in China. Yes, under a Democrat, like my two sons are doing in the United States Navy. They’re not asking what political affiliation the President is… I will always put my country first, and I think that’s important.

Romney responded by saying that serving country first means “standing for people who believe in conservative principles.” He said he doesn’t disrespect Huntsman’s decision, he just thinks that the person who should represent the GOP in the election is somebody who didn’t call President Obama a remarkable leader, “and went to be his ambassador in China.”

Huntsman then hit Romney with a line, directed at moderator David Gregory, that brought loud, sustained applause from the crowd:

“This nation is divided, David, because of attitudes like that.”
