Jon Stewart appeared on The Today Show this morning promoting the upcoming Night of Too Many Stars, but he also addressed the revelations in the past week about his old friend Louis C.K.
C.K., who was the guest on Stewart’s penultimate Daily Show two years ago, was set to be one of the many celebrities appearing in Night of Too Many Stars, but after the New York Times‘ report on his disturbing sexual misconduct (and his subsequent statement saying “these stories are true”), he was axed from the program.
Stewart had been asked last year about allegations against C.K. and said at the time, “All I can tell you is I’ve worked with Louis for 30 years and he’s a wonderful man and person and I’ve never heard anything about this.”
Today, when Matt Lauer asked him about the revelations in the past week, Stewart said he was “stunned.”
He spoke to the “blindness” of men in the comedy business like himself and said, “We’re used to being in charge, and I think if you talk to women, they’re in a very difficult position.”
Stewart also acknowledged that comedy “is not a great environment for women” in the first place.
