Jon Stewart on Leaving Daily Show: ‘It Is Time for Someone Else’

Jon Stewart ended tonight’s Daily Show with the big announcement of his impending departure from the late night program after 16 years on the air. Stewart thanked Comedy Central for giving him an “incredible opportunity 17 years ago to pilot this wonderful franchise.” And then, he said, “it is time for someone else to have that opportunity.”

Stewart said he’s not quite sure when he’ll be leaving the show, but on the plus side, “I will have dinner on a school night with my family, who I have heard from multiple sources are lovely people.”

He admitted he won’t miss being on TV, but he will miss coming into the studio every day and working with all his friends and colleagues. He thanked the Daily Show staff and loyal audience before ending with the big moment of zen: a monkey washing a cat.

Stewart talked about retiring a few months ago, in which he expressed his concerns about both staying on too long and leaving too early.
