Jon Stewart To Appear On ‘Egypt’s Daily Show’
Jon Stewart isn’t returning to The Daily Show until the fall, but Egyptian viewers will be able to catch him on Bassem Youssef‘s al-Bernameg (or “The Program” in English) this Friday. Stewart is returning the favor for Youssef, who has appeared as a guest on the American Daily Show multiple times.
Stewart, who is currently on leave from his hosting duties to make his directorial debut with the Iranian-set drama Rosewater, arrived in Cairo Wednesday for a three-day visit. The last time Youssef appeared on The Daily Show in April, he discussed his recent arrest for satirizing Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi.
In a previous segment about Youssef’s struggles with the Morsi regime, Stewart defends his fellow comedian against censorship and intimidation:
“Bassem loves Egypt so much he chooses to live there even though some crazy guy is threatening to arrest him. By the way, without Bassem and all those journalists and bloggers and brave protestors who took to Tahrir Square to voice dissent, you, President Morsi, would not be in a position to repress them. For someone who spent time in jail yourself… under Mubarak you seem awfully eager to send other people there for the same non-crimes. Just like you, they will only emerge from prison stronger and more determined.”
