Josh Earnest: Democrats Boycotting Inauguration Aren’t ‘Harming a Smooth Transition’

In his final daily press briefing of the Obama administration today, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed the dozens of Democrats planning to boycott the inauguration.

Over 50 Democratic members of Congress are not attending Donald Trump‘s inauguration tomorrow, many of them making this decision in the wake of Trump’s criticisms of John Lewis for saying he’s not a legitimate president.

“I don’t think it’s contributing to the division,” Earnest said, “but I do think it’s a reflection of the division in the country right now.”

He touted how much the Obama administration has been working with the Trump team on a smooth transition despite their “profound concerns with some of the rhetoric and policy positions.”

Earnest added that members of Congress are “freer” in their decisions and so, he concluded, “I don’t think that what they’re doing is harming a smooth transition.”
