Josh Earnest’s Favorite SNL Cast Member Was Never a Member of the Cast

NBC’s relentless promotion of this weekend’s Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special extended to Morning Joe on Friday, where Joe Scarborough asked White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest to name his favorite cast member in the show’s history.

“I think you have to go with Steve Martin, right?” Earnest replied, clearly taken a bit off guard by the question, adding that he “really sort of pioneered a lot of the public figures on that show.”

Scarborough was fairly quick to point out that Martin was actually a frequent guest host on the show, appearing on the show 15 times between 1976 and 2009. The only person who has done it more times than that is Alec Baldwin, who hosted the show for the 16th time in 2011.

“Was he just a frequent guest host and not actually a cast member?” a somewhat disappointed Earnest asked.

With recurring characters like King Tut and one of the Wild and Crazy Guys, it was an honest mistake, but not one that anyone who knows the show’s history well would make.

Ultimately, what’s worse? Thinking Steve Martin was a regular cast member on SNL or never having seen “Charlie Bit My Finger” and “David After Dentist?”
