Jussie Smollett Reportedly Tells Empire Cast That He’s Innocent and Asks for Their Support
The saga of Jussie Smollett and the alleged hate crime attack — that he is accused to have staged by visibly angry Chicago Police officials — continues to take unexpected turns.
CNN’s Ryan Young is reporting that in a private meeting with fellow cast members of the Fox show Empire Smollett apologized for the distraction he had caused his fellow castmates before maintaining his innocence. This is a remarkable development considering the significant evidence presented by both Chicago PD Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Cook County State Attorneys provided in separate press conferences Thursday.
Smollet’s attorney’s released a statement that fell short of claiming innocence but did announce plans to mount an aggressive defense. Chicago-based attorneys Todd Pugh and Victor Henderson said via statement: “Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked. Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense.”
