Katy Tur Battles Sam Nunberg Over Roy Moore: How Does an Accused Pedophile Help Trump?
Earlier this morning, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told Fox News that the Trump administration wanted the votes on the GOP tax bill when asked if they were backing Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore despite the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct that have surfaced in recent days. This was followed by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders stating at this afternoon’s press briefing that the “president wants people in the House and the Senate who support his agenda.”
With President Donald Trump remaining mum on Moore but his White House sending these signals that the administration won’t be upset if Moore wins the Senate race next month, a former Trump campaign advisor appeared on MSNBC to state that Trump should be a bit more vocal that he wants Moore to be victorious.
Host Katy Tur began her interview with Sam Nunberg by asking him if he felt Trump should campaign for Moore. After he pivoted by stating the Alabama GOP has endorsed Moore, Tur asked the question again. “I think the president should make clear he needs Roy Moore’s vote and, yes, therefore, I think the president should make clear despite the allegations,” Nunberg responded.
“So the president should make clear he endorses a man who has credible allegations, credibly accused of being a pedophile?” Tur shot back.
Nunberg insisted that while he wasn’t personally defending Moore, the president still needed Moore’s vote in the Senate. This led to a back-and-forth over whether it was more important to get a Republican in the Senate than protecting children, with Nunberg then questioning some of the allegations and claiming some have already been discredited. As you could imagine, this caused the segment to grow even more tense.
After asking Nunberg if he believed Harvey Weinstein’s accusers — he said he did — Tur pressed him on Trump’s low approval ratings. “How does campaigning with an accused pedophile help that approval rating?” Tur asked.
“This could help rehabilitate him with his party,” Nunberg said.
The two continued to debate on the matter for a few more minutes. The MSNBC host pushed Nunberg on how embracing an accused pedophile would help the president in Washington. She also asked the how he would react if it was his sister who had been harassed or assaulted by Moore.
