Katy Tur to Democratic Sen.: Was the Singing Taunt from Democrats After Healthcare Vote Appropriate?

On today’s MTP Daily, Katy Tur spoke with Senator Chris Van Hollen (D- MD) this afternoon about the Democrats’ response to the Republican health care bill making it through the House yesterday.

One notable moment from yesterday was after the vote, when some Democrats taunted Republicans by singing “Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!”

Given how many Democrats were warning about the serious consequences of this legislation, Tur asked Senator Van Hollen, “Is it appropriate for House Democrats to be singing on the House floor, for them to be cheering this on?”

“What message does that send to the American people,” she added, “when they’re singing? This this something that is… life and death.”

Van Hollen responded, “I’m not sure I would have recommended that response.”

He claimed there was a Republican “beer party” after the vote (a nonexistent beer party).

Former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was asked about this earlier today and avoided the question of whether it was appropriate.
