Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer was very impressed by President Obama‘s NSA speech on Friday and said on Fox News’ Special Report last night that it was a “terrific speech” that hit all the right notes; those notes being all style and nothing of much substantive change, a which has been how critics of the speech reacted to it.
Krauthammer explained why, despite what those critics said, it was important that Obama not change much, and threw in a backhanded compliment to Obama’s speech-making skills.
It was 90 percent smoke and mirrors and very little substantive change, which is what we need. In fact, it was the best use of Obama’s rhetorical powers of dazzling with very little content since the ’08 campaign.
He continued on to say that the reforms Obama did propose are just “cosmetic changes to make it look as if he did something” and “really unimportant in the overall scheme,” which he saw as a positive.
