MSNBC host Krystal Ball asked a question today to make Democrats feel really uncomfortable: is Hillary Clinton just the Democratic equivalent of Mitt Romney? After all, she argued, Clinton comes across as very smart and competent, but also remarkably tone-deaf and politically calculating.
Ball took various shots at Clinton’s “unremarkable” book tour, her “dissonant’ comment about being “dead broke,” and her “bland” career at the State Department, remarking that “for the Clintons, everything is carefully poll-tested, focus-grouped, and weather-vaned.”
And so given that aforementioned comment about being dead broke, Ball had to wonder if Clinton’s too similar to the candidate Republicans believed would be able to take down President Obama two years ago.
“Is Hillary Clinton our Mitt Romney? Smart? Sure. Competent? Absolutely. Incredible resumé? Without a doubt. But also, kind of tone-deaf and unrelatable.”
Ball said in 2008, Clinton, like Romney did in 2012, “exuded competence but with no core beliefs” and that’s why she continues to remain unconvinced that Clinton would be the best candidate for the Democrats to run in 2016.
