Lana Del Rey Returns To SNL: I Must’ve Clubbed A Baby Seal While Singing The Taliban National Anthem
Lana Del Rey‘s lips (as portrayed to perfection by Kristen Wiig — which is especially interesting considering how many Twitterers wondered whether the performance was actually just a sketch starring Wiig) visited Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update to address the criticism hurled her away after her “stiff, distant and weird” performance three weeks ago.
“Based on the public’s response,” said Del Rey, referring to the backlash, “I must have […] clubbed a baby seal while singing the Taliban national anthem.”
Addressing criticism that she changed her name and image as a “marketing gimmick” after failing to find fame under her real name, Del Rey apologized. Plus, she added, it’s not like other stars ever change their names in their pursuit of fame. Right?
When asked what had made people so angry, Del Rey guessed it must have been the fact that her performance was stiff, distant and weird… likely a result of her being stiff, distant and weird.
“In this age of dangerous school bullying, you have set an important message,” she pointed out. “If you think someone is weird, you should criticize them as much as possible.” Almost as powerful as the time SNL made a sketch addressing Ashlee Simpson’s many critics.
