Larry Wilmore and Bree Newsome Toast to Removing the Confederate Flag
Last Saturday, activist Bree Newsome removed the Confederate flag from atop its designated flagpole on the South Carolina statehouse grounds — after climbing the flagpole to retrieve the relic. Just about everyone in the media loved her for it, including potential Black Panther director Ava DuVernay and Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore.
But Wilmore’s praise wasn’t all televised posturing. No, the former “Senior Black Correspondent” for The Daily Show loved Newsome’s act so much, he invited her onto Comedy Central for a brief interview segment on Thursday night.
If you were expecting any hard-hitting journalism, then you obviously haven’t been watching Comedy Central’s weeknight programs all that much. However, the audience did learn a few interesting things about the experience:
- Including Newsome, around 10 people were involved in planning and accomplishing act.
- Newsome had never climbed before.
- Her reaction to getting the flag: “Yes! Take me to jail!”
Wilmore then discussed the many online comparisons, visual and otherwise, between Newsome and fictional superheroes. So he and his writers offered a few superhero names for Newsome: the Ascender, Soul Pole, Sister Swifter and Queen Bree. However, Wilmore ultimately thought Bree’s actual name was a better fit.
