Larry Wilmore Revisits Confederate Flag Removal In SC: ‘This Is Some Bullsh*t!’
Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore used a recent story about a South Carolina representative’s Confederate flag-themed Christmas card to revisit the hot button issue of the summer.
The Associated Press previously reported on Republican Rep. Chris Corley‘s card, which began, “May your Christmas be filled with memories of a happier time when South Carolina’s leaders possessed morals, convictions and the principles to stand for what is right.” It ended with, “May you have a blessed and happy Christmas, and may you take this joyous time as an opportunity to ask for forgiveness of all your sins such as betrayal.”
Why did these lines about a “happier time” and “betrayal” matter? Because Corely’s apparently “smart-aleck style” Christmas card contained a picture of the South Carolina statehouse with the Confederate flag still flying — presumably taken before it was removed.
Naturally, Wilmore and Nightly Show correspondent Mike Yard couldn’t resist the story.
“‘Betrayal’? You lost the war 150 year ago. It’s time to get over it!” Wilmore exclaimed before introducing a sketch titled “Merry Confederate Christmas.”
In the sketch, Wilmore and several white actors and comedians discuss Rep. Corley’s card, as well as their own Confederate flag-themed Christmas cards. Wilmore, donning what can only be described as a Colonel Sanders cosplay, agrees at every turn with the chorus.
Yard, meanwhile, sits in on the conversation with a steady array of “This is some bullsh*t!” comments.
“Are you kidding me? I thought we took this thing down in July!”
