Larry Wilmore Tells Kimmel He’s Ready for Pressure of Replacing Colbert
Ahead of his January 19 premiere of The Nightly Show on Comedy Central, Larry Wilmore sat down on the couch of one his soon-to-be late night competitors, Jimmy Kimmel, to talk about the enormous burden of taking over for a beloved icon like Stephen Colbert.
“Do you feel pressure because The Colbert Report was hugely successful and now you’re in that time slot, do you get to keep any of his staff, did he leave anything for you?” Kimmel asked the new host.
“Well, we took over his building, took over his time slot, I’m living in his house now,” Wilmore replied, mostly shrugging off the “pressure” question. He said Colbert took most of his writing staff with him to the Late Show on CBS, but there are a handful of crew members left.
In terms of ratings, Colbert would consistently pull in viewers numbers that were just under if not matching those of The Daily Show. It’s hard to imagine that the lesser-known Wilmore will be able to pull off that feat right off the bat.
