President Donald Trump launched a fresh attack on a lawmaker in his own party Friday morning, mocking Sen. Bob Corker (TN-R) for allegedly asking whether he should run for office in the 2018 midterms:
Strange statement by Bob Corker considering that he is constantly asking me whether or not he should run again in ’18. Tennessee not happy!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 25, 2017
The tweet is in response to Corker’s criticism of the president: the Tennessee Republican slammed Trump amidst his response to the Charlottesville terror attacks, arguing Trump “has not demonstrated he understands the character of this nation.”
And when CNN broke the news of the president’s latest lash-out, reporter Chris Cillizza was exasperated, letting out an audible “Ughhhh.”
Cillizza noted that Trump once considered Corker for vice president and secretary of state, before claiming that what Trump is essentially doing is “taking a private conversation with the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a well regarded senator, who is no Trump hater, and airing it to 36 million Twitter followers.”
“The problem is there’s no strategy,” he continued. “This is cutting off your nose to spite your face-ism run rampant.”
Cillizza compared it to Trump’s attacks on Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona “when the fact is, Jeff Flake is the party’s best chance of holding a competitive seat they could lose in 2018.”
“Argggghhhhh,” Cillizza concluded.
