As just about anyone could have expected, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick wasn’t exactly eager to delve into DeflateGate when he sat down with David Letterman for an interview set to air later tonight. But the Late Show host tried anyway, asking Belichick if there was any “horseplay” going on before last month’s AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts.
“I know you know exactly what happened, you know I know you know, and what it was, was some kind of horseplay, am I right?” Letterman asked Belichick.
“No,” he answered. “Well, as we all know, as the footballs get colder, they deflate,” Belichick added, repeating the scientific reasoning he used in a series of bizarre press conferences on the matter.
When Letterman asked Belichick if this “nonsense” started with the Colts, the always diplomatic coach replied, “Dave, we’re just out there, playing a game, doing the best we can.”
And that’s why Bill Belichick is a much better NFL coach than late night talk show guest.
