Letterman: Trump is ‘Despicable’, but His Political Rise Was Completely Fair

David Letterman says that even though Donald Trump certainly rubs many people the wrong way, it doesn’t mean his ascension is an aberration to American politics.

NBC already offered one preview of their interview with the retired funnyman, but today, a new clip shows Tom Brokaw asking him if he ever wishes he could return to his old job to comment on the insanity of the 2016 election.

“I understand that [Trump]’s repugnant to people,” Letterman said. “But, you tell me, the men putting together the Constitution, witnessing this election, wouldn’t they have just said, ‘That’s part of the way we set it up. Good luck’?”

Though Trump has accused his opponents of doing this, Brokaw agreed that Trump never had to “cheat” to win the GOP nomination.

“There’s nothing illegal going on. It’s just he’s despicable,” said Letterman. “And in everybody’s school, you hear, ‘The great thing about America is anybody can grow up to be President.’ Oh, jeez. I guess that might be true.”
