Depending on how you feel about the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, liberal documentarian Michael Moore either made your day or depressed the hell out of you last night. During the first in a series of special convention episodes of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher Wednesday night, Moore told host Bill Maher and his panel that he doesn’t just think Trump can win, but that he thinks Trump will win on the strength of his messaging on trade in the rust belt.
“I’m sorry to be the buzzkill here, so early on, but I think Trump is going to win,” Moore said. MSNBC host and fellow panelist Joy Reid agreed with Moore on the strength of that messaging, but pointed out that Trump’s party has failed to press that case at this week’s convention:
Later in the show, Moore repeated his prediction, which Reid answered by pointing out the fact that Trump would need to win “something like 66% of white voters” to win in a presidential election year. Maher chimed in that he preferred Moore’s warning to Reid’s reassurances:
Yeah, but I’d rather hear this message than “Black folks are going to save us.”
