Appearing on CNN’s Reliable Sources this weekend, liberal talk radio host Thom Hartmann suggested the attempts to get advertisers to boycott Rush Limbaugh‘s radio show have actually harmed progressive radio shows in the process.
When asked whether he agrees with Media Matters’ declaration that the possibility of Cumulus dropping Limbaugh from 40 of its stations is a “victory” for progressive radio, Hartmann noted that “it’s just a business deal” and not related to the host’s conservative politics.
He then expressed his belief that the boycott efforts may have backfired on progressives:
David Brock and Media Matters were leading the boycott Limbaugh crusade, which did presumably some damage to Limbaugh’s show. I can tell you it did a lot of damage to progressive talk radio, because a lot of advertisers, right across the board, said just pull me out of all talk radio. I don’t know Limbaugh’s numbers, but I do know that, on our side, progressive talk radio took a hit as a consequence.
