Lindsey Graham Finds it ‘Astonishing’ Trump Investigated as Russian Agent: ‘How Could the FBI Do That?’
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is very concerned about reports that the FBI opened an investigation into whether Donald Trump was acting as a Russian agent, but not because Trump may have been working on Russia’s behalf. Graham is “astonished” that the FBI would even bother to open such a probe.
On this week’s edition of Fox News Sunday, anchor Chris Wallace asked Graham to weigh in on The New York Times report that the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation into Trump after Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey.
“One, did you know about that? And two, what do you think?” Wallace asked, adding “I have to say, it’s an astonishing idea that the FBI, the bureau investigating whether the president was a Russian agent.”
“Number one, that story came from somebody who leaked it with an agenda, so I’d like to know who leaked it,” Graham said, “because they have an agenda not very friendly to president Trump, and I, for one, don’t trust what I read in The New York Times.”
But the fact that Trump’s actions led the FBI to believe that Trump could be a Russian agent didn’t faze Graham in the least. Instead, he was disturbed that the FBI would even bother to check.
“I’m going to ask the FBI director, ‘was there a counterintelligence investigation opened up regarding the president as being a potential agent of the Russians?'” Graham said. “I find it astonishing, and to me, it tells me a lot about the people running the FBI, McCabe and that crowd.”
Graham then promised to use congressional oversight as a check on the FBI, not on Trump.
“If this really did happen, Congress needs to know about it,” Graham said, “and what I want to do is make sure, how could the FBI do that? What kind of checks and balances are there?”
