Speaking from the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) thanked his fellow senators for their kind words following the tragic mass shooting in his state last week. “We have had our problems, but we’re still a family,” he said of his colleagues. “So thank you all, from all over this country, for the kindness you’ve shown during these difficult times.”

But then, Graham began to speak about the shooting itself. “I don’t know how you can sit with somebody for an hour in a church and pray with them and get up and shoot them,” the senator said. “That’s Mideast hate. That’s something I didn’t think we had here, but apparently we do.”

The day after the attack, Graham appeared on The View and downplayed the racial motives behind the Charleston shooter’s actions, suggesting he may have been “looking for Christians to kill.”
