LISTEN: Rick Perry’s Campaign Song Is a Country-Rap Joint About Rick Perry

Screen Shot 2015-06-04 at 1.13.29 PMFormer Texas Gov. Rick Perry just declared that he was entering the GOP presidential primaries, making the announcement in an airplane hangar with a crowd of supporters. And a country rap song.

Yes. It is a song, with Rick Perry lyrics inserted into the 2012 song “Answer to No One,” by Colt Ford and featuring JJ Lawhorn. An ostensibly official song. With a rapper. Talking about how awesome Rick Perry is. It features lines such as “Rick Perry supporter/let’s protect our borders,” and something about how they don’t want the authorities to take their guns.

Surprisingly, it gets less cringe-y with the country parts, but quickly tanks when the rapper comes back into play. (It’s probably because the original song was pretty decent, but lacked all the bad Rick Perry rap lyrics.)

Unfortunately, this is not the first GOP presidential rap song — or rap song adapted into gospel — and since it’s what the kids listen to these days, it surely will not be the last.
