Maher Calls Rubio A ‘Shameless Liar’ Over Debt Claim In SOTU Response

Tuesday night, during Sen. Marco Rubio‘s thirst-quenching Republican party response to the State of the Union, Bill Maher posted the comment below on Facebook.

The accusation immediately set off a firestorm among Maher’s more than 1.5 million Facebook fans, many of whom apparently only “like” the comedian so they can troll him on the site. In the 12 hours since the comment was posted, it has received over 75,000 likes and more than 4,000 comments, far more than his typical posts receive.

As many of the commenters pointed out, along with the conservative website NewsBusters, Rubio appears to have been correct in his assertion that “President Obama created more debt in four years than his predecessor did in eight.”

According to, under President Bush the total public debt rose by approximately $4.9 trillion, while under President Obama it has risen by approximately $5.8 trillion.

What many of Maher’s fiercest critics fail to point out is that a significant portion of Obama’s debt went to digging the country out the economic crisis that began under Bush. So while Rubio’s facts may have been technically accurate, they don’t exactly paint the full picture. Perhaps Maher should have gone with “shameless deceiver.”
