Maher on Trump-Hannity Relationship: Imagine If ‘Obama Was Talking to Rachel Maddow Every Day’

After briefly addressing it early on, Bill Maher ended his Friday night panel by talking about this week’s big Sean Hannity news.

It was just this week, remember, that Hannity’s name was revealed as a client of Trump lawyer Michael Cohen. Hannity said Cohen never represented him and he only sought legal advice from him.

“Obviously he carries Trump’s water every day,” Maher said. “We didn’t know that he was talking to Trump every day. I mean, this is such a violation of what the Fourth Estate is supposed to be! It’s not supposed to be a branch of the First Estate! Can you imagine if they found out if Obama was talking to Rachel Maddow every day?”

He was presumably referring to the Washington Post report this week looking into not just the relationship between the President and the Fox News host, but “the frequency of Hannity’s contact with Trump.”

New York Times columnist Frank Bruni told Maher it’s more than a little “scary” to think that “on major issues, the President’s first call is to Sean Hannity.”

CBS News’ Alex Wagner said “Fox News is on the hook here” because of how it presents itself as a news network.

Fox News defended Hannity in a statement earlier this week stating, “While FOX News was unaware of Sean Hannity’s informal relationship with Michael Cohen and was surprised by the announcement in court yesterday, we have reviewed the matter and spoken to Sean and he continues to have our full support.”
