Maher Praises Steve Bannon For Coming On His Show: It’s ‘Why Republicans Have Power and We Have None’
On Friday night, Bill Maher welcomed former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon onto his show.
Maher began the interview by thanking him, noting he thanks all conservatives who agree to come in the “lion’s den.”
“I appreciate it and it says volumes why Republicans have power and we have none,” Maher told Bannon. “Hillary Clinton never came here. Maybe she’d be president if she was a little more confident.”
“Big time,” Bannon agreed.
The Real Time host invoked how Bannon was disinvited from the New Yorker Festival earlier this month after the announcement of his inclusion sparked major uproar, causing other invited speakers to withdraw from the event. Maher then quoted Malcolm Gladwell who said, “Call me old-fashioned, but I would have thought that the point of a Festival of Ideas was to expose the audience to ideas. If you only invite your friends over, it’s called a dinner party.”
“Well, they chased me for- you know, David Remnick chased me for a year to be on his podcast and he came to me and said, ‘Hey, we’d be honored if you were in this Festival of Ideas,'” Bannon told Maher. “I said, ‘Fine.’ I don’t want compensation, but I like going into hostile audiences with tough interviewers. I do very little conservative media now. I do CNN, BBC, you know, The Economist, I go to the toughest places, toughest interviewers and say ‘Hey, no holds barred, hostile audiences, and let’s get it on.'”
“And again, that’s why the Republicans are in power,” Maher responded.
“I think it does sharpen the blade,” Bannon added.
